The autumn season is here and with it the harvest period. In Saint-Chef (and surrounding areas), the “Balmes Dauphinoises” winegrowers cultivate their grape varieties all year round. Today, we show you more wine-growing activity at the Balcons du Dauphiné.
Harvesting, an ancestral tradition
Wine culture is not new to Saint-Chef. Imported by the Benedictine monks from the Middle Ages, the vines today shape the landscape of this rural area. Several winegrowers have established themselves in the immediate vicinity of the abbey town and each year, many pickers flock to take part in the harvest.
Often synonymous with family and/or convivial reunions, the harvest takes place mainly in September and October in the territory of the Balcons du Dauphiné.
The winegrowers of “Balmes Dauphinoises”
The territory currently has five wine estates, all located in the southern part of the Balcons du Dauphiné. All of them make a point of honoring the quality of their grape varieties and some of them even have the privilege of seeing their wine served on starred tables in internationally renowned restaurants.
A work rewarded by the IGP
Demanding on the quality of their productions and sensitive to organic farming or even biodynamics, the Balmes Dauphinoises winegrowers have seen their work rewarded with the creation of the Protected Geographical Indication (IGP) of " Balmes Dauphinoises in 2011 (and yes, as they say: hard work always pays off 🙂 ).
This PGI is driven by new societal consumer trends that favor short circuits and environmental impact.
After the harvest, comes the time of Beaujolais Nouveau
Awaited each year by all wine lovers, Beaujolais Nouveau will be marketed at the end of its vinification. And we already know the date! So, mark your calendars!
This annual meeting, presenting the primeur wine, takes place every 3rd Thursday in November.
The 2023 vintage will therefore be available from November 26.
For the occasion, many bars and restaurants in the territory of the Balcons du Dauphiné organize festive evenings.
With family or friends, around a plate of charcuterie and/or cheese, you will certainly appreciate Beaujolais Nouveau!
