1. Villemoirieu and its heritage

– Mineralogical, the mineral museum is located in the castle of Montiracle, a historic Templar commandery remodeled in the 2100th and XNUMXth centuries. The museum features an impressive collection of more than XNUMX mineral samples. Visitors can appreciate the historical heritage of the castle while exploring the variety of minerals on display. The museum offers an ice cream bar on a spacious terrace in high season.

– The parish church of Saint Jean-Baptiste: rebuilt in 1837, this Catholic church has a rich paneled ceiling over the nave and a bell tower added the same year. The church was redeveloped in 1890, keeping the foundations of the old bell tower.

– The Saint Maurice de Beptenoud church: mentioned as early as 1172 and part of the Saint-Chef abbey, it is distinguished by its Romanesque architecture with a single nave, its small apse topped by a bell tower and its portal with a lintel on molded pads. It was for a long time surrounded by a cemetery used until 1891.

– The Moirieu chapel: located on the Moras road, it was restored in 2020.

– The Mallin fortified house (private site): built at the end of the 15th century by the Fayers, with a main tower and a four-level gallery, decorated with antique medallions and transformed into neo-Gothic style in the 19th century.

– The Bienassis fortified house (private site): built at the end of the 1897th century by the de Vallins, redeveloped in XNUMX by Gournet into a medieval castle, with an L-shaped body, tower with porch, and turrets with conical roofs.

– The Beptenoud fortified house (private site): existing since 1332, remodeled in the XNUMXth century, this XNUMXth century building has an L-shaped main building, a main tower and a dovecote, with mullioned windows.

– Vernacular heritage: explore the common ovens, wash houses, fountains and wells, which are all living testimonies of the daily life of past centuries.


2. Villemoirieu, on the nature side, the Sensitive Natural Area of ​​the Marais de la Besseye*
This 35 hectare marsh with its reed bed, its cladiae, and its varied wetlands, offers a habitat for many rare animal and plant species. Visitors can explore this site via a 3 km thematic trail, complete with observation pontoons, educational ponds and information panels.
