Chozeau

Discover Chozeau, southwest of the Balcons du Dauphiné. This town offers a rural setting with a built heritage composed of a medieval castle, a church and a fortified house. You will also find the Chalignieu pond for a nature break.
1. Chozeau and its heritage

– The church of Chozeau, a 19th century building, is decorated with a bell tower-porch dedicated to Saint Bruno, founding saint of the Grande Chartreuse. Its apse (semi-circular end of a church, behind the choir), formerly covered with slate, is the last memory of an Augustinian chapel, testifying to the religious heritage of Chozeau.

– The Château de Poisieu (private site): it is a fortified residence dating from the 14th century that can be admired from the road. According to legend, it was inhabited by Aymar de Poisieu, lieutenant of Joan of Arc, who immortalized her heroism with a statue of the warrior on the village fountain (go and take a look!).

– The Fortified House of Boirieu: another fortified house, emblematic of local heritage, it dominates the plain. Nicknamed the Wolf Farm, probably after the “wolf spring” which precedes it, this square tower is surrounded by legends around the wolf which reminds us that the animal was present until the 18th century in Isère.

– The cup stone: nicknamed the Lord's Chair or the Cheese of Gargantua, this monolith is a precious prehistoric vestige. It is also listed as a historic monument.

2. Chozeau on the nature side with the Chaligneu pond*
This Sensitive Natural Space (ENS) is perfect for a getaway surrounded by nature. Since its acquisition by the town hall in 2017, the site has been developed to promote this natural wealth.
Popular with locals and visitors alike, it is home to a remarkable diversity of species, from waterfowl to buttercups, the common toad and the common frog. Even the rare pond turtle has been seen there, making this pond a preserved and unique ecosystem.

*Events are regularly organized in the local ENSs. Information and registration at the Balcons du Dauphiné Tourist Office.
