Porte de Quirieu

It belongs to the first enclosure of the 1th century ramparts. This gate was walled up in 1535 and replaced by the New Gate. The Quirieu gate was restored and reopened in 1930.
It opened onto the road joining Lagnieu and the old port of Quirieu to the north, on the banks of the Rhône, because in the Middle Ages river transport was considered safer than road transport, especially for wine. The original paving updated in front of the door was used for the circulation of the sewage channel which was in the Middle Ages in the middle of the street and not on the sides as nowadays. The floor is, in fact, arranged in a double curved slope in the center. So when two people came to meet, the one of higher rank kept the top of the pavement, the other deviating naturally to leave him the place in the dry; hence the expression "holding the upper hand".
