Saint-Romain-de-Jalionas

Discover Saint-Romain de Jalionas, located to the west of the Balcons du Dauphiné in northern Isère. The Gallo-Roman archaeological site and the experimental garden are among the most precious heritage assets of the Balcons du Dauphiné!
1. Saint-Romain de Jalionas and its heritage

– The Gallo-Roman archaeological site of Vernai and its experimental garden: the site, inhabited since the Neolithic, reveals historical continuity from Prehistory to the present day. Archaeological discoveries attest to human activity from the Neolithic period with polished axes and unturned ceramics. It reveals the remains of a large Gallo-Roman villa, including thermal baths, a hydraulic mill, and a granary. The villa, having reached its peak during the Roman era, extended over 13 hectares. The experimental garden is a unique project where experiments are carried out based on the writings of Latin agronomists. This experimental Gallo-Roman garden serves as a link between the past and the present and allows the preservation of biodiversity (free access all year round)*.

– The Saint-Romain church and the old presbytery: they are at the heart of the Vernai archaeological site and have both been classified as historic monuments since 2010. The church dates approximately from the XNUMXth or XNUMXth centuries, while the presbytery , more recent, was created during the expansion of the cure. There was even once a Delphine castle attached to the church, which was destroyed during the wars between Dauphiné and Savoy.

– The Peillard mill: existing since the 13th century, it is fed by the Girondan, a tributary of the Rhône. Its buildings, retaining the 19th century machinery, are today maintained and run by a local association. Come and discover it during annual events such as the Bread Festival or the European Heritage Days (JEP).

2. Saint-Romain de Jalionas, nature side

– The greenway to the east and Viarhôna to the north: these trails offer magnificent routes for lovers of cycling (only Viarhôna is paved) and walks in the countryside, allowing you to discover the beauty of the landscapes.

3. Local festivities

– Le Brandon: a traditional celebration marking the arrival of spring, where children participate in collecting ingredients for waffles and pancakes.

– The Jalionades: a summer event in the form of an Olympic Games, bringing together residents in a spirit of friendly competition.
