Chapelle haute de Saint-Chef et ses fresques romanes
Saint-Chef is home to an abbey church which is a reference in terms of French religious heritage. Its XNUMXth century Romanesque frescoes are among the richest, the best preserved and perhaps the least known to the general public.
From an exemplary reference, historians reproduced it identically around 1940 and exhibited it at the city of architecture and heritage at the Trocadero in Paris. When you enter this upper chapel, you find yourself drawn in, the decorations covering the entire room (nearly 100 m2). From the floor covered with gold and blue mosaics, to the ocher vault, visitors will only find a similar building in the church of Saint-Savin sur Gartempe, the French reference in terms of Romanesque frescoes. Small in proportion, this chapel is great in symbol since it deals with the Celestial Jerusalem according to Saint John.
