4. The legend of Cingle and its 7 fountains

” Legend has it that the Cingle building was built by a giant, Count Hugonin. He loved music so much that his seven daughters played an instrument... But the count had problems with the “Black Beast”, called Pharamine, who lived in the spring of the cliff and who devoured sheep and cows every day. once night comes.

One evening at a ball, through the castle window, Pharamine saw the count's daughters dancing, and the beast fell in love! While the count proposed to the Emperor of Germany to choose seven princes to marry his daughters, the beast was very upset. The seven selected princes came to Vernas. The seven young girls were arriving to meet them when the beast Pharamine came out of his hiding place. She had fasted so much that she devoured princes, horses and servants. To be sure that the young girls would not run away, she charmed them into “dhuines”, fairies who live at the bottom of the fountains.

Count Hugonin, mad with grief, decided to set a trap for the beast. One evening, with his sheep as bait, the giant waited for the beast and, from the top of the cliff, threw a large rock at it, which came crashing down on Pharamine. Under the violence of the shock, seven springs gushed from the mountain, allowing the count's daughters to escape through the cracks. But the enchantment forced them to return to hide before daylight. So, they went to the castle at night, and returned to the cliff at sunrise.

If the curious listens, he can perhaps hear in the sound of the water of the seven fountains, the music of the seven girls, played from their golden rooms, under the mountain...” *
