Parcours patrimonial de Saint-Chef

à Saint-Chef

Less than an hour from Lyon, let yourself be surprised by the historic center of Saint-Chef, its abbey church and its famous 12th century Romanesque frescoes. It is also the village of Frédéric Dard and a land of IGP Balmes Dauphinoises wine.

On your route, you can find the gems of Saint-Chef:

The abbey church, the principal legacy of the former Saint-Chef Abbey, testifies by its monumental dimensions to the importance of this site in the Middle Ages. It was built in the 11th century on the foundations of an earlier church. It is in the purest Romanesque style, except for its Gothic portal. It was saved from the ravages of time thanks to Prosper Mérimée, who included it in the first inventory of Historical Monuments in 1840. Since then, the abbey church has benefited from a conservation and restoration program.

– The museum: it presents the history of the village and local traditions, as well as the works of Frédéric Dard and Louis Seigner.

– The medieval garden with free access: discover which plants were used in the Middle Ages and their function thanks to explanatory panels.

– The Tessier de Savy castle: listed in the Supplementary Inventory of Historical Monuments (ISMH).

– The arboretum: take a shaded break and try to find the names of the trees around you (check your answers using the explanatory panels). You can also do the fitness trail on site.

– IGP wine from Balmes Dauphinoises: during your visit to the city, go and meet one of the winegrowers who perpetuate this wine culture imported by the Benedictine monks in the Middle Ages.

– And many more…
