The castle was built in the middle of the XNUMXth century by the lord of La Poype de Vertrieu, to replace his feudal residence of the time dominating the site, then in ruins.
The so-called “modern” castle is built between the village and the Rhône, which it overlooks via a terrace. The building was bought in 1712 by Antoine Bathéon, who became Bathéon de Vertrieu, and restored, under the direction of the Lyon architect Claude Perret, who then had the park designed.
At the end of the 19th century, the main building was enlarged, and the towers on the village side were covered with imperial roofs. The estate opens through a monumental gate next to the church, onto a path paved with cat's heads. The outbuildings are located between the village and the castle.
To the West, regular terraced gardens and a parterre planted with conical yews and boxwood end with a terrace bordering the Rhône, while to the East the landscaped park is laid out in the English style, on a 1843 drawing by Luizet father and son. At the east end there remains a vatage.
The castle, the outbuildings, the park, its buildings and the large gate have been Listed MH since 1991. The park has been gradually restored, and inaugurated in its current state in 2018.
The village has several other remarkable monuments and an original participatory garden, the "Jardin des Simples", linked by a thematic path.
