This classical style 17th century cloister was originally a place of contemplation. Its flowerbeds, its pond and its ambulatory still make it an island of tranquility today. The portal, a work of art ironwork, dates from 1715.
Before entering this 17th century cloister, admire the monumental portal at the entrance. Listed as a Historic Monument, this masterpiece of ironwork was originally installed in the enclosure of a chapel that no longer exists. It was transferred here when the town decided to build an entrance to the Place de la Nation.
The classical architecture of the cloister is characteristic of the 17th century. In fact, the vaults follow each other in a regular rhythm and the shapes are completely sober, without ostentatious embellishment. The cloister was dedicated to relaxation, meditation and spiritual awakening. The monks were walking in the ambulatory. The flowerbeds in the center as well as the sound of the water in the pool were supposed to facilitate meditation.
