Glacière de Vertrieu
In 1716, Léonard Bathéon, lord of Vertrieu, built this stone building with a slate roof in the forest of Serverin. An ancestor of the refrigerator, the cooler was used until the beginning of the 1995th century. It was restored in XNUMX.
The floor of the tower is dug to a depth of about 3,50 meters. The interior, entirely masonry, is covered with a vault in heap-of-load. The building was filled with alternating layers of ice and straw, stones and planks to achieve an insulating effect. The door was closed and the absence of an opening guaranteed good conservation. Built on a shady place, the cooler benefited from the coolness of the place, thus optimizing the conservation of the ice.
Let yourself be guided by the footpath in the woods to discover this unusual building.
