à Crémieu

la mairie de Crémieu

Since 1791, the town hall, then called the communal house, has been located in the former convent of the Hermits of St. Augustine. Two beautiful rooms are open to visitors: the warming room and the former chapter house, now the municipal council chamber.

Since the Revolution, the town hall has been housed in the former convent of the Hermits of Saint Augustine. Above
On the entrance door, set within a stained-glass window, are the city's coat of arms on a gold and azure background which
are the colours of the Dauphiné.

In 1317, the Hermits of Saint Augustine numbered only about ten, but gradually the convent grew larger and was embellished thanks to the generosity of John II, but especially of his son Humbert II, who would be the last Dauphin of Dauphiné since he would sell it in 1349 to the Crown of France.

To the right of the entrance, the turret with its mullioned windows houses a spiral staircase: all hallmarks of a somewhat late Renaissance style in the Dauphiné region. Above the cartouche bearing the date 1547, a bas-relief sculpture depicts the defaced coat of arms of the Dauphiné, along with two decapitated angels. Should these be interpreted as signs of revolutionary vandalism or damage related to the Wars of Religion?
