L'ancien château delphinal
Located on Saint-Laurent hill, this 12th century castle is a private residence. Owned by the Baron de la Tour and then the Dauphin, it once protected the Cremolans within its ramparts and served as a relay for the Dauphiné administration.
This fortress stands atop Saint-Laurent hill and faces the fortifications of Saint-Hippolyte hill.
By the 16th century, the castle had fallen into ruin despite the restoration work undertaken over the centuries. Its military role ended in the 17th century, but this stronghold played an effective part under the last Dauphins. Thanks to its strategic location, Crémieu ensured secure communications with the right bank of the Rhône and was for a long time one of the gateways to the Dauphiné.
The Château des Dauphins, after being abandoned and used as a stone quarry, was partially restored in the early 20th century. Its successive owners undertook renovations. Only a few vestiges of the medieval castle remain, including the south and west walls, the castle chapel, and a circular tower.
The castle is a privately owned and inhabited property. It is never open to the public, even during European Heritage Days.
