The Porte Neuve was fitted out in the 16th century in an old tower of the enclosure. It was the last to be pierced. This door can be considered as the symbol of the transition between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
It is also given the name Porte François Ier to recall the many passages that this sovereign made in Crémieu during the Italian wars.
Its crown of machicolations, that is to say the balconies open at height, was a defensive element typical of the medieval period. However, below in the upper third of the door, in the middle you notice the presence of a hole: it is a gunboat which then foreshadowed the use of gunpowder and heavy artillery in combat, thus opening the prospect of much deadlier battles.
