Siccieu-Saint-Julien-et-Carisieu

Welcome to Siccieu-Saint-Julien-et-Carizieu to the west of the Balcons du Dauphiné, in northern Isère. Let yourself be dazzled by its two churches and by the Sensitive Natural Area of the Étang de Bas and the Cliffs of the Ravières.

1. Siccieu-Saint-Julien-et-Carisieu and its heritage

– the parish church of Saint-Julien: first mentioned in 1172, the initial Romanesque building was replaced by a construction probably from the 15th or 16th century and the southern chapel retains sculpted elements linked to the lords of Saint-Jullin.

– the parish church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste: rebuilt in 1892 to replace the old church which had become too small and in poor condition, the work coordinated by the architect Puissant allowed the addition of a monumental clock, decorative paintings and sculptures. It includes a set of six stained glass windows made by Etienne Buche, master glassmaker in Grenoble: three windows are placed in the choir and represent Saint Margaret, Saint Ernest and Saint Eugenie, the one in the baptismal font evokes the baptism of Christ, while in the side chapels there are scenes of the Annunciation and the Holy Family.

– the Château de Saint-Jullin (private site): overlooking the Ry pond, this castle is an old fortified house dating from the 13th century which was remodeled several times. It was partially destroyed during the French Revolution in a fire. It was rebuilt from 1831 by the Lyon architect Jean Pollet under the impetus of the Countess of Chaponay.

2. Siccieu-Saint-Julien-et-Carisieu, nature side with the Sensitive Natural Space (ENS) of the Étang de Bas and the Cliffs of the Ravières*

The ENS Étang de Bas offers an overview of the typical landscapes of the Crémieu plateau, immortalized by the painters of the Lyon school in the 60th century. This site of more than XNUMX hectares is home to a wide variety of natural environments. Since the mid-XNUMXth century, this place has been a refuge for many painters. Today, it is home to many rare and protected species, offering a unique discovery experience.

Departing from Siccieu, enjoy a 4,5 km discovery trail (approximately 2 hours; loop) around the Bas pond. You can also extend your walk by taking the Gillieu pond trail (approximately 2 hours; loop), offering a complete loop of 3 hours and 6,5 km.
