Espace Naturel Sensible de la Save : étang de Roche Plage et communaux de Thuile
The Roche Plage pond and the communal areas of Thuile form a truly remarkable landscaped ensemble where dry hillsides rub shoulders with wetlands.
This place has won over many painters who have found a source of inspiration here. Among them, Auguste Ravier and Abel Gay spent long hours drawing the Roche pond and its surroundings.
The pond, fed by the river Save, was renamed "Pond of Roche Plage" when, in the 1940s, it became a place of pleasure attracting swimmers from the Morestel and Lyon region.
The commons of Thuile composed of dry lawns were grazed by the cattle of the inhabitants of the hamlet. After the war, agricultural abandonment put an end to this practice and the landscape began to close in little by little.
It is this diversity of environments (meadows, moors, woods, ponds) which today makes it possible to shelter a remarkable biodiversity: European pond turtle, beaver, bee-eater, purple heron...
The dragonfly with four tasks, developing in the pond and going to hunt on the commons shows the complementarity of these spaces.
Aware of the interest of this place, the Department of Isère, the municipality of St Victor de Morestel, the Cholat company and the union of the inhabitants of Thuile have chosen to integrate this remarkable space into the Sensitive Natural Space of the Sava.
A management taking into account the ecological stakes, the reception of the public and the agricultural activity is implemented in connection with the local actors.
A 5 km pedestrian loop will allow you to discover these magnificent landscapes and reach the Save lake.
