La Croix de Brassard

This cast metal cross was fixed on a brick column placed on a stone base.
This cross is remarkable because it has the symbols of the Passion.
Its creator did not randomly place the various instruments and objects of the Passion of Christ. On the contrary, he thought of and wanted an intelligent, ordered composition that could give those who contemplate it a complete lesson on the passion and death of Christ.

We find in the upper part of the cross:
– The phylactery which bears the inscription INRI (Iesus Nazarenus Rex Judeorum) is Jesus of Nazareth, king of the Jews.
– The three nails which fixed Christ on the wood of the cross.

At the crossing surrounded by a glory
– The chalice and the host
– A stole, a priestly ornament made up of a wide band widened into a palette at each end.
– The choir of flaming flesh: sign of the love of Christ
– The grapes and the vine leaf to the left and right of the cross refer to the Eucharist.

On the right side of the cross
– The Ewer: This object can have several meanings: one evokes the washing of the feet of his apostles by Jesus, another evokes the washing of the hands by which Pilate frees himself from all responsibility in the death of his prisoner according to the evangelist Matthew and another refers to the vase which contained the vinegar presented to the tortured person to quench his thirst.
– the basin and the sword which surrounds itself
– The sword or badelaire (sword with curved blade)

On the left side of the cross:
– The ladder which was used to lower the body of the sacrificed Christ
– The spear which is a strong symbol. The soldiers used this object in order to ensure the death of Christ (piercing Christ in the side.
– The Stick and the sponge soaked in vinegar which were used to moisten the lips of Christ on the cross who asked for a drink.

Below
– The column of flagellation in the shape of a baluster represents the column around which Christ was tied to be whipped to blood.
