Chapelle de Leyrieu – Notre Dame de la Salette

The origin of this chapel remains somewhat mysterious. There would have first been a small oratory from 1776, on which would have been erected a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of La Salette, in 1867.
This chapel would have been erected following the Marian fervor aroused among Christians after the apparitions of the Virgin at La Salette near Corps in 1856.

The sisters of the Loyette convent regularly took children there on a pilgrimage on the first Sunday of September until 1. This pilgrimage fell into disuse.

Then during the Second World War, on September 11, 1944, an American plane crashed on Leyrieu hill, killing 15 people. The chapel then regained its vocation as a place of contemplation and has received an American delegation every year since.

On November 6, 1969, a Canadian armed forces plane crashed into the cliff, killing its pilot.

The Notre Dame de la Salette Chapel therefore hosts a commemoration every two years organized by the Friends of the Chapel association in memory of the victims of the two air accidents that occurred in 1944 and 1969.
