La fresque des Crémolans

This fresco of old trades was produced in July 1998 by "La Cité de la création". The population participated in the choice of the theme and its realization. The aim was to show that trade has been a real tradition in Crémieu since the Middle Ages.
This fresco is read by level, from bottom to top and from left to right.
On the lower level you can see, on the left, the traveling merchant.
Indeed, in the Middle Ages, Crémieu was on the road linking Lyon to Savoy and Switzerland to Italy. Numerous commercial exchanges then took place.
Then on the right is the turkey peddler. The turkey being a particularity of Crémieu. Since 1786 and still today, Crémieu has organized a turkey fair.
On the 2nd level, the cooper is busy on the left then the merchant with his scales represents barter. Next to it, the coiner strikes coins in memory of the mint which existed from 1337 to 1554, thus marking the economic importance of Crémieu at that time.
Finally, on the right is the grain merchant, Crémieu having in its hall a market regulating the price of grain.
At the 3rd level, you see the weaver on the left.
In the 18th and 19th century, the textile industry, with hemp and wool, flourished in Crémieu.
Next to it, the peasant mows, representing a whole section of the population inside and outside the walls.
Besides, the winemaker recalls that from the 17th century to the beginning of the 20th century, vineyards covered the hills of the city.
Then the butcher is represented with a scene of execution of a pig and further to the right are the leather trades. The work of skin is also mentioned in Crémieu by the rue des Adobeurs mentioned as early as the 14th century.
In the upper part of the fresco, more contemporary professions linked to current tourist activity are represented.
The waiter, the market gardener in reference to the typical Wednesday market in the hall, the communication professions represented by the computer, a mountain biker recalling the many possible hikes around Crémieu and finally the catering professions with the cook and the to cook.
