Eglise Saint-Jean-Baptiste

The construction of this church began in the 1785th century. It houses a collection of Augustinian paintings unique in France, including the double Apostolic and Prophetic Credo, as well as the oldest organ in Isère mentioned in XNUMX in La chronicle Ollivet.
This church is the old chapel of the Hermits of Saint Augustin who were able to exercise curial functions from 1570 to 1647. During the Revolution, when all the monastic buildings were bought by the Commune, it became the parish church of Saint Jean-Baptiste.
The part which goes from the octagonal pillars to the entrance dates from the 15th century, as do the six side chapels built into the walls of the nave. Finally, other elements date back to the 17th century, notably the chapel of the Vallin family topped by the Upper Chapel of the Rosary, on the right, before the heart.
This church was built according to a “hall” church plan dear to the mendicant orders.
Thus, it is rectangular in plan with a nave with three naves and a flat apse. The original oak-paneled ceiling was replaced in the 19th century by a ceiling with neo-Gothic vaults on ribbed ribs.
The pulpit in the middle of the church and the stalls on the sides are made of walnut. They are the work of the Cremolan carpenter named Grillat.
The organ above the front door. It was originally in the town's old parish church. It dates from 1785, making it the oldest in the Isère department.
From the 2nd half of the 14th century, the Hermits of Saint Augustine had enough money to have their chapel decorated with murals painted in 3 successive campaigns.
These paintings, released since the 2000s, constitute an important historical testimony. Neither the identity of the painters, nor their origin, nor the exact date of the work are known.
However, a study has revealed a little more. Around twenty scenes were thus identified.
